All three prep hikes are training for this expedition through classic Sierra granite, meadows, and alpine terrain. Scouts complete Point Reyes, Ohlone, and Mt. Tallac before earning a spot on the Big Sam crew. This high-elevation loop challenges scouts with sustained mileage, altitude exposure, and technical navigation through the Emigrant Wilderness.

Day 0: Kennedy Meadows to Relief Reservoir

2.77 mi · +1,071 ft / -59 ft
StartKennedy Meadows Pack Station
CampRelief Reservoir
Elev. Range6,318 – 7,337 ft

A short but punchy opening climb to test gear fit, pack weight, and begin altitude acclimatization. The trail starts in classic high-Sierra forest but quickly emerges into the Middle Fork Stanislaus River canyon — significant sections are fully exposed, rocky, and dusty, with the steep granite-canyon climb catching direct afternoon sun. Water is plentiful from the river (filter everything). Relief Reservoir itself is a beautiful granite-rimmed lake — a great first-night reward.

🌡️
Weather: Warm and dry — typical late-July highs upper 70s to low 80s (°F) at the trailhead. Canyon shade arrives early due to steep walls.
💧
Water: Plentiful from the Middle Fork Stanislaus River — filter everything.
🥾
Key note: This is the shakedown day — test gear and pace before the trip gets serious.

Day 1: Relief Reservoir to Relief Valley

6.22 mi · +1,874 ft / -431 ft
StartRelief Reservoir
CampRelief Valley (near Granite Dome)
Elev. Range7,310 – 8,799 ft

The big climbing day of the first stretch — sustained uphill through forested pockets, open meadows, and granite benches, with sun exposure increasing as you gain elevation. Grouse Creek, Lower Relief Lake, and creeks in Relief Valley keep water plentiful throughout. Relief Valley is a wide subalpine meadow system with good camp options.

🌡️
Weather: Highs in the mid-70s (°F); nights at ~8,000 ft drop into the upper 40s (°F).
🦟
Bugs: Meadows and marshy zones are prime mosquito habitat in late July — camp on dry granite slabs or breezy benches, not low meadow.
💧
Water: Plentiful — Grouse Creek, Lower Relief Lake, and Relief Valley creeks.

Day 2: Relief Valley to Long Lake / Deer Lake

5.59 mi · +555 ft / -619 ft
StartRelief Valley
CampLong Lake / Deer Lake
Elev. Range8,501 – 8,889 ft

A scenic subalpine rollercoaster — constant small ascents and descents across granite ridges and meadow corridors, highly exposed to sun on the reflective granite flats (sunscreen and sun-hoodies recommended). The trail crosses multiple creeks and passes several alpine lakes, so water is abundant. Long Lake and Deer Lake are classic high-Sierra swimming lakes.

🌡️
Weather: Pleasant and sunny, highs in the low 70s (°F); nights drop to the mid-40s (°F).
🏊
Highlight: Deer Lake and Long Lake offer excellent swimming — moderate mileage day, good one to enjoy the water.
🦟
Bugs: Watch for mosquitoes at dusk near the water's edge.

Day 3: Long Lake / Deer Lake to Emigrant Lake

6.49 mi · +924 ft / -705 ft
StartLong Lake / Deer Lake
CampEmigrant Lake (East Edge)
Mule DropResupply arrives

The mule-drop day — hiking through the heart of the granite basin network with very little forest canopy, ascending to subalpine saddles before descending past Buck Lake and wrapping around to Emigrant Lake's east side. Emigrant Lake is one of the marquee features of the wilderness; camping on the eastern edge gets a quieter site with better wind shelter.

🌡️
Weather: Highs in the low 70s (°F); wind exposure increases around the large Emigrant Lake basin.
💧
Water: Buck Lake and Emigrant Lake are the primary sources.
🐴
Mule Drop: Resupply cans refill here — Phase 2 begins, 2 additional adults join the group from lunch onward.

Day 4: Emigrant Lake to High Emigrant Lake

6.51 mi · +957 ft / -182 ft
StartEmigrant Lake
CampHigh Emigrant Lake
Elev. Range8,817 – 9,715 ft

Positioning day for tomorrow's summit push. A sustained, gradual alpine climb through rocky basins and gravel flats, crossing the treeline boundary (~9,500 ft) into almost completely exposed alpine terrain. This puts you at the base of Big Sam for tomorrow's crossing — High Emigrant Lake is windy and highly exposed to storms, so set up tents securely.

🌡️
Weather: Cooler and windier — highs in the upper 60s (°F); nights dip to upper 30s–low 40s (°F).
💧
Water: Emigrant Creek and High Emigrant Lake — top off here before tomorrow's dry stretch.
Camp setup: High Emigrant Lake is exposed to storms — stake tents securely.

Day 5: High Emigrant Lake over Big Sam to Kennedy Lake

6.31 mi · +1,084 ft / -2,396 ft
Climb toBig Sam · 10,804 ft
CampKennedy Lake (South Meadow)
Elev. Range8,406 – 10,802 ft

The crux of the loop. Zero shade — the first half of the day is spent above 10,000 ft on the barren, rock-strewn ridge of Big Sam, climbing steep switchbacks up volcanic scree and talus before a grueling, knee-knocking 2,400 ft descent into the Kennedy Lake basin. There are virtually no reliable water sources between High Emigrant Lake and the Kennedy Lake descent — carry at least 3 liters per person. Kennedy Lake's south meadow rewards the effort with great campsites and a victory swim.

🌅
Alpine start: Leave camp no later than 7:00 AM to clear the Big Sam summit before afternoon convective clouds build.
Lightning: Afternoon thunderstorm risk is high on the exposed ridge — a severe hazard. If thunder is heard or clouds build rapidly, head down immediately; don't wait for rain.
💧
Dry zone: No reliable water between High Emigrant Lake and the Kennedy Lake descent — carry 3+ liters per person.
🦵
Descent: Trekking poles strongly recommended for the steep 2,400 ft knee-knocking descent.

Day 6: Kennedy Lake to Kennedy Meadows Pack Station

8.86 mi · +92 ft / -2,274 ft
StartKennedy Lake
FinishKennedy Meadows Pack Station
Elev. Range6,318 – 8,500 ft

A long but very easy "walk-it-out" final day — flat, sandy valley trail with a steady downhill grade following Kennedy Creek, with tree canopy increasing as you descend back into the river canyon. Packs are light, terrain is gentle, and the trail brings you directly back to the Pack Station where you parked. Celebrate the loop completion at the resort restaurant.

🌡️
Weather: Warm — highs upper 70s to low 80s (°F) as you return to the trailhead.
💧
Water: Kennedy Creek runs along the trail — consistent access the whole way.

⚠ "Full Menu Cost" cards above are the reference price if buying 100% new (also what the per-can breakdown reflects). The Master Shopping List below has been reconciled against BOTH leftover-stock rounds — its Group $ column and Grand Total show the real $2,993.91 you actually need to spend. Per-person figures are blended across the headcount change (19 people Day 0-2, 21 people Day 3-6) — treat as approximate. Ghirardelli Hot Cocoa, Jack Link's Beef Stick, Dried Apricots/Dates, and both Mountain House entrées are still estimated placeholder prices — confirm real prices and I'll recompute.

Master Shopping List

P1 = Phase 1 qty per can (Days 0–2, initial carry, 19 people) · P2 = Phase 2 qty per can (Days 3–6, mule drop, 21 people — 2 adults join Day 3 lunch onward) · Group Total = 3×(Scout-3) + 1×(Scout-4) + 2×(Adult-3) [+ 1×(Adult-2) for Phase 2 rows]

The Ohlone Wilderness Trail is one of the classic backpacking routes in the East Bay, linking ridges and valleys of the Diablo Range across Mission Peak Regional Preserve, Sunol Regional Wilderness, and Del Valle Regional Park. This trek travels west to east — starting in the hills above Fremont and crossing open ranchland, oak woodland, and rolling ridgelines before descending to Lake Del Valle.

Terrain is typical of the Diablo Range: long climbs along grassy ridges, shaded oak canyons, and wide open hillsides used for grazing livestock. Expect changing weather with warm afternoons and cooler evenings, especially along the ridges.

The trip begins at the Ohlone Wilderness Trailhead near Fremont, climbing steadily away from the city into the open hills of Mission Peak Regional Preserve. The first several miles are the most sustained climb of the entire trek — gaining elevation steadily through grasslands and scattered oak groves.

As the group climbs higher, views open dramatically across the Santa Clara Valley and San Francisco Bay, often with hawks and vultures riding thermals overhead. After cresting the high ridgeline, the trail rolls through several smaller climbs before descending into the wooded valley where Star's Rest Camp is located.

⚠ Saturday snacks and lunch are carried in individual backpacks. Bear cans are needed for overnight storage only (dinner + dessert in the SAT layer).

🏔 Night 1 Camp

Star's Rest Camp

Picnic tables Primitive sites Pit toilet 💧 Seasonal creek (filter) Shaded canyon

Tucked away in a shaded canyon with large oak trees. Quieter and more sheltered than the exposed ridges earlier in the day.

💧 Water note — Day 1 Reliable water is not guaranteed along the ridge sections. Fill all bottles at the trailhead and carry 2–3 L per person. Seasonal creek water is usually available at Star's Rest — filter or treat before drinking.

Day two is shorter in distance but involves steady climbing eastward along the Diablo Range ridges. Rolling terrain with a few steeper segments — overall pace is moderate compared to Day 1, but gain-per-mile is the highest of the trip.

This stretch passes through open ranchland. Hikers will likely encounter grazing cattle along the trail. Stay calm, walk slowly around herds, give wide berth.

Views are expansive — wide panoramas of the East Bay hills and the distant Central Valley on clear days.

⚠ Distribute all snacks before leaving camp. Double Gatorade day — hydration is critical on the highest elevation gain section.

🏔 Night 2 Camp

Maggie's Half Acre Camp

Picnic tables Primitive sites Pit toilet 💧 Seasonal water source (filter) Open meadow Excellent stargazing

One of the more popular backcountry camps on the trail. Sits in a relatively open meadow surrounded by low hills — can be breezy but offers outstanding stargazing on clear nights.

💧 Water note — Day 2 Fill all water bottles at Star's Rest before departing — dry ridgeline ahead. Seasonal creeks may be present near Maggie's Half Acre. Confirm conditions before the trip. Fill bottles before bed — dry ridgeline again on Monday morning.

The final day begins with gentle ridgeline travel before the trail gradually turns downhill toward Lake Del Valle. A series of rolling hills then commits to a longer descent into the lake basin.

This stretch provides some of the best views of the trip as hikers approach the lake, with sweeping vistas of the reservoir and surrounding hills.

The trail exits near the Ardilla Group Camp area along the shore of Lake Del Valle, where the landscape transitions from backcountry wilderness to developed park facilities.

📍 Drinking water, bathrooms, and picnic areas at Lake Del Valle on exit. Celebrate with a meal in Livermore or Pleasanton!

⚠ Attendance Requirement — Read This

To remain on the 50-Miler crew, you must have attended at least two of the three prep outings. If you have only attended one so far (Point Reyes or Ohlone), this trip is mandatory. If this presents a conflict, email [email protected] immediately.

This is our third and final overnight preparation outing before we hit the trail for the 50-Miler in July. This trip is critical: we are heading to Tahoe to simulate the high-altitude conditions we will face this summer. Your body works significantly harder at 9,000+ feet, and this is the time to learn how you react and how to pace yourself.
1
Drive to Tahoe · Establish Base Camp
Friday, May 8  ·  Depart no later than 4:30 PM  ·  Tahoe Valley Campground

Meet at the Troop 222 Shed immediately after school. We will depart absolutely no later than 4:30 PM — be there early, not on time.

We drive to Tahoe Valley Campground to establish base camp and begin acclimating to the elevation. The campground sits at approximately 6,200 ft — your body starts adjusting the moment you arrive, so a full night at altitude before the summit push matters.

🍽 Dinner: Grab a bagged dinner before departure or bring money for a stop along the way. No group dinner provided Friday night.

Early wake-up before sunrise. We drive to the Mt. Tallac Trailhead to beat the crowds and practice an efficient "alpine start" — a skill you will use every day on the 50-Miler.

Mt. Tallac is a strenuous, continuous, steep ascent with no flat sections to recover on. Expect the full 5 miles out to feel relentless. Pace yourself deliberately, especially in the first 2 miles. At 9,000+ ft, your cardiovascular system is working significantly harder than at sea level — this is the point of the exercise.

The summit rewards with panoramic views of Lake Tahoe, Fallen Leaf Lake, and the Desolation Wilderness — a preview of the high-country terrain you will cross on the Big Sam Loop in July.

⚠ Snow note: If we encounter significant snow on the upper mountain, we will turn back. Safety over the summit — we are not yet trained for microspikes or ice axes. Leaders make the call.

🍽 Food & Water for Summit Day Carry 2–3 L water minimum from the trailhead — limited reliable sources on the route. Pack all food for the day (snacks + lunch) before leaving camp. High altitude increases calorie burn significantly — eat before you feel hungry.

Break Camp · Return Home
Sunday, May 10  ·  Breakfast, pack out  ·  ETA home: afternoon

Breakfast at camp, then break down and pack out. We aim to be on the road by mid-morning to ensure everyone is home and rested for the school week.

Take stock of how your body responded to the altitude over the weekend. Recovery is part of the training — note any headaches, fatigue, or appetite changes and discuss with a leader. This data matters for planning your 50-Miler crew readiness.

🏃 Pack Out

Tahoe Valley Campground → Home

Leave no trace — pack out all trash Deflate sleeping pads, stow bear cans

Target departure: mid-morning. ETA back to the shed: afternoon. Confirm pickup arrangements with parents before Saturday night.

Know Before
You Go

Altitude sickness

Headache, nausea, dizziness, or shortness of breath beyond normal exertion = descend immediately. Do not push through AMS symptoms. Tell a leader.

Snow & turn-back policy

If significant snow on upper mountain, we turn back. We are not trained for microspikes or ice axes. Leaders make the call — no pressure to summit.

Sun & UV exposure

UV intensity increases with elevation. Sunscreen, sun hat, and sun shirt are mandatory. Reapply every 2 hours — you will burn faster than at sea level.

💧

Hydration

Altitude and exertion both accelerate dehydration. Carry 2–3 L from the trailhead. Drink before you feel thirsty. Electrolytes recommended.

Afternoon thunderstorms

Common in Tahoe in late spring. Early alpine start avoids exposure. If lightning develops above treeline, descend immediately — do not wait.

📻

Cell coverage

Unreliable above treeline. Move to lower elevation or ridgeline to improve signal. Note GPS coordinates at key waypoints before losing coverage.

📋

Wilderness permit

Desolation Wilderness day permit required — self-issue at trailhead register. Each person signs in. Keep your copy.

🦔

Ticks & wildlife

Ticks present in lower forested sections. Full-body check at camp each evening. Black bears present in Tahoe — use bear boxes at campground.
